CFL Betting Notes - Week 17
October 13, 2015

The CFL regular season continues to wind down as teams jockey for position for the start of the Grey Cup Playoffs. Toronto took a big step towards clinching a spot with last Tuesday’s 38-35 victory against Ottawa as a one-point home favorite and Hamilton helped its playoff chances with a 30-15 win over Saskatchewan as an 8 ½-point favorite at home last Friday night.

Saturday’s CFL action kicked things off with Edmonton grinding-out a huge 15-11 road win over Calgary as a three-point underdog and Winnipeg kept the upsets rolling with a 29-26 win at British Columbia as a six-point underdog. Week 16 closed things out on Monday with Toronto’s second win in six days with a 25-17 victory against Montreal as a two-point road favorite.

Friday, Oct. 16

Winnipeg Blue Bombers (5-10 SU, 7-7-1 ATS) vs. Ottawa RedBlacks (8-6 SU, 9-5 ATS)
Point-spread: Ottawa -4
Total: 51 ½

Game Overview

Winnipeg kept its playoff hopes alive with last week’s win and at 5-10 on the year it is now a half game in back of BC for the third spot in the West. The Blue Bombers have had their issues this season with a defense that has allowed an average of 28.5 points a game, but the 29 points they scored against the Lions was the most since posting 30 points in a Week 1 win against Saskatchewan.

The Redblacks took a step backwards last week following a 4-1 straight-up run in their previous five games and a 6-1 run against the spread over its previous seven contests. They are still in solid shape for the third playoff spot in the East and just one game in back of both Toronto and Hamilton for the outright division title. The total has now gone OVER in their last four games.

Betting Trends

This will be the first of two meetings in an upcoming home-and-home series. These two split last season’s series 1-1 both SU and ATS with each team winning both ways at home. The total went OVER in both contests.

Saturday, Oct. 17

Calgary Stampeders (11-4 SU, 4-11 ATS) vs. Toronto Argonauts (9-5 SU, 8-6 ATS)
Point-spread: Toronto -1
Total: 51
Game Overview

The Stampeders’ stunning loss to their division rivals last week dropped them into a tie with the Eskimos atop the West, but Edmonton now owns the tie-break with the 2-1 series win. Bo Levi Mitchell’s interception near the end of that game proved to be costly and while he does have 21 touchdown tosses on the year, he also has the second-most interceptions in the CFL with 13.

Toronto was on double-duty in Week 16 and that two-game run as put the Argonauts right in the thick of the East Division title race. They have now won their last three games both SU and ATS and the total has gone OVER in five of their last seven games. Toronto is averaging 26.8 points a game, but it is also allowing an average of 28.6 points a game on defense.

Betting Trends

Calgary is just 2-9 ATS in its last 11 games against the Argonauts and 3-9 ATS in its last 12 road games against Toronto. The total has gone OVER in four of the Stampeders last six road games in this inter-division matchup.

British Columbia Lions (5-9 SU, 7-7 ATS) vs. Edmonton Eskimos (11-4 SU, 9-6 ATS)
Point-spread: Edmonton -9 ½
Total: 47 ½

Game Overview

The Lions cannot afford too many more losses at 5-9 SU on the year, but they only have one SU win in their last five games. They failed to cover as favorites in last week’s loss to Winnipeg, but they are a profitable 5-1 ATS when closing as underdogs this season. BC is also 4-3 ATS in seven road games and the total has gone OVER in its last four games.

Edmonton is now in the driver seat in the West and last week’s upset assured at least one home game in the upcoming CFL Playoffs. Mike Reilly completed 29-of-40 passes for 264 yards and a score in that game, but he was also picked-off twice. In what has been an injury-plagued season, he has now thrown for 1,432 yards and eight touchdowns, but he has also been intercepted six times.

Betting Trends

The Lions are 10-4 SU in the last 14 meetings of this division rivalry and the total has gone OVER in four of the last six games. These two split the first two games this season SU, but BC is 2-0 ATS with the total going OVER in both matchups.

Sunday, Oct. 18

Hamilton Tiger-Cats (9-5 SU, 10-4 ATS) vs. Montreal Alouettes (5-9 SU, 6-7-1 ATS)
Point-spread: OFF
Total: OFF

Game Overview

Hamilton continues to press-on without the services of quarterback Zach Collaros, who was lost for the season with a torn ACL in his knee. In his place, Jeff Mathews threw for 385 yards and three touchdowns in the Week 16 win against Saskatchewan. He finished the game with a completion rate of 66.7 percent on 33 attempts. He also added another 27 yards on the ground as the Tiger-Cats second leading rusher in that game.

Montreal has now lost its last three games both SU and ATS to fade from playoff contention. It could still secure a spot as a crossover team into the West if it can string together a few victories and pass either BC or Winnipeg in the win column. The Alouettes still have one of the more stingy defenses in the league with a points-allowed average of 21.9, but this has ballooned to 32.3 points during the current three-game slide.

Betting Trends

Hamilton has posted just one SU win in its last 19 road games against Montreal and the total has stayed UNDER in six of its last eight road games against the Alouettes. The Tiger-Cats have already lost twice to their division rivals this season both SU and ATS.

CFL.ca Game Notes: A look at Week 17

TORONTO – While playoff spots have already been claimed before Week 17 has kicked off, there is still plenty left to be determined.

The Bombers hope to carry the momentum of their victory over the Lions in a clash with the REDBLACKS as both teams remain in the thick of the playoff hunt.

The Stampeders are on the road to square off against the Argonauts at Tim Hortons Field. Can Toronto win its fourth straight game?

There's a new team sitting at the top of the West division as the Eskimos put their newfound standing to the test against the Lions.

Finally, the Ticats look to avoid a season sweep at the hands of the Alouettes.

Equipped with the most up-to-date storylines, stats, milestones and trends, enjoy this week’s CFL.ca Game Notes.

Around the League

Playoff Streaks on the Line: The Als’ current run of 19 consecutive years in the playoffs is the second-longest in league history and only Edmonton at 34 years in a row (1972-2005) has a longer one. The Lions’ current run of 18 consecutive years in the playoffs matches the third-longest in league history and they currently hold onto third in the West but are even on wins at 5 with Winnipeg and Montreal.

Montreal Trade: With the acquisition of Kevin Glenn, that will now make it eight quarterbacks to have been on the Alouettes roster in 2015 (Crompton, LeFevour, Bridge, Cato, Marsh, Manley, Boone & Glenn). If Glenn starts a game for Montreal, then that will be Montreal’s 4th different QB starter in a single season, one short of the CFL record of 5 QB Starters set Ottawa in 1995, and matched by Hamilton (1996) and Calgary (2003).

Travelling QB: For Glenn, he now holds the singular distinction of being the only CFL player to have ever been on the roster of 8 different clubs in his career as he stopped briefly in Toronto and Ottawa without playing. He has played and started a game for five teams with a sixth expected in Montreal in 2015. Jason Armstead and Eddie Brown hold the record actually playing for 7 teams each. Glenn ranks #7 in CFL history in both passing yards (45,510) and games started (179).

A historic season: In 2015, there have been 25 games decided by 4 points or less, already seven more than all of 2014, and this is a new all-time, single-season CFL record. The previous record for any season (with either the traditional 9-team or 8-team configurations) was 24 0-4 point games in 2010 and in 1996. The record-setting game was Winnipeg’s last-play, 29-26 victory at B.C. Place in Week #16 that tightened the race for the final Western playoff spot.

Season Series sweeps: In a 9-team CFL configuration there are 36 “season series” comprised of either two or three games. In 2015, the SWEEP has become prominent, especially those with tie-breaker implications. Through Week 16, of the 36 head-to-head matchups, 27 could end up with one team sweeping the other. Prominent among shutouts already achieved are Hamilton’s 3-0 edge over Toronto, Ottawa’s 3-0 triumph over Montreal, Winnipeg’s 2-0 win over BC, and Toronto’s 3-0 defeat of Ottawa.

Week 16 Scoring and Offence: Week 16 contests averaged 48.2 points per game while the average net offence was 675 yards. The average margin of victory in Week 16 was less than a touchdown per game at 6.6 points and one more club overcame a deficit of at least 10 points to come back and win making it 13 for the 2015 season.

East-West Season Series: East Division clubs in 2015 have a combined W-L record of 31-25 .554 with three teams above the .500 mark. The last time that three Eastern teams finished above .500 in the same year was 2004 when Hamilton ended up at 9-8-1 in 3rd place. Ottawa sits in 3rd spot this week two games above .500 with four to play. The East leads the West 19 wins to 13 and need only two victories in the final 8 meetings to secure the edge in 2015. They have not done that since the 2004 season (23-17).

Penalties update: Last week’s games averaged 22.4 penalties reducing the season average to its lowest point of the year at 22.4 per game. Over the last 15 CFL games, penalty totals have averaged only 22 calls per game.

Two West Teams and the rest: The last time that only two Western teams finished .500 or better was as recently as 2012 when Saskatchewan secured 3rd place at 8-10. This year is trending to have the West’s third place club potentially as low as 6 or 7 wins, and that has not happened since 2007 (Calgary in 3rd at 7-11). Edmonton and Calgary have secured home playoff dates with the Eskimos holding the advantage via the tie-breaker.

Protecting the Quarterback: Game results for Week 16 proved the point about avoiding QB Sacks. Winning clubs allowed only 13 sacks in total, while losing teams allowed 21 sacks. That made it 10 consecutive weeks where losing teams allowed more than the total of the winning clubs for that week.

QB Stability: In Week 16, only Montreal did not start and finish their game with the same quarterback. In fact, the Alouettes used three QBs in total for long stretches and unusually all three attempted 10 or more passes in the game. If Anthony Boone gets the nod next week, he would become the CFL’s 22nd different quarterback to make a start in 2015, one more than in 2014.

The Ottawa Playoff Picture: An Ottawa win in this game vs Winnipeg and they are in the playoffs for the first time since 1994 (as they have won the season series over Montreal). Even with a loss vs Winnipeg, a Montreal LOSS on Sunday would also put Ottawa is into the playoffs as the worst that Ottawa could be is 8-10 and the best Montreal mark would be 8-10. Even if Ottawa ends up tied with Montreal at 9-9 they survive as they have won the season series over Montreal and would
also survive a 3-way tie among Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal (based on record among tied teams).

The Winnipeg Playoff Picture: A Winnipeg win in this game would put them in third place at 6-10. BC would have two games in hand but then be forced to win at least two more out of their four remaining games as the Blue Bombers hold the tie-breaker (2-0 season series win). The Lions’ schedule is by far the hardest among themselves, Winnipeg and Montreal. The four BC opponents have a combined winning % of .690.

Winnipeg Walk-Off FG wins: Before Sergio Castillo’s effort last week, the last time that a Winnipeg kicker made a field goal on the Bombers’ final play was on August 24, 2007 when Rob Pikula made a 28-yarder to beat Toronto 15-13. The kick was the equivalent to a walk-off as it came with just 0:07 to play in the game. The last time that Winnipeg made an absolute last-play FG to win was by Troy Westwood from 55 yards on July 10, 2003.

Ottawa dominating the 3rd Quarter: In each of the last 7 games, Ottawa has come out for the 2nd half and taken over the game. They have outscored the opposition in the 3rd Quarter in all 7 of those games and by a margin of 68 to 10. They have scored 10 or more points in the 3rd Quarter in 5 of those 7 games.

Player Highlights

Lavelle Hawkins: Hawkins has had an immediate impact since coming back from injury and over his 5-game run he has 24 catches for 441 yards for 2 TDs, an average of 74 yards per game. Over his last 4 games he is averaging 95.0 receiving yards.

Emmanuel Arceneaux: In the two games prior to Jonathon Jennings taking over at QB for BC, Arceneaux had posted totals of just 6 catches for 38 yards (19.0 per game). In the 4 games since then, he has 95, 94, 137 and 151 yards. That is an average of 119.3 yards per game with Jennings at QB. In his last 4 games he has 25 catches for 477 yards and 4 TDs. In the previous 8 games he had just 19 receptions in total for 335 yards.

Adam Bighill: Comes into this game needing just 6 tackles to reach 100 for the second time in his CFL career. He trails CFL leader Jeff Knox Jr. by just one with a game in hand. His average of 6.7 DT per game is #1 and on pace for 121 this season.

Deon Lacey: Leads the CFL with 21 Special Teams Tackles and is trying to become just the third player to lead the league two years in a row. The only other players to do that are Aldi Henry (2000-2001) and Brendan Rogers in 1993-1994.

Richie Leone: Has made just 5 of his last 10 convert attempts and is now 22-of-29 for the season.

Sean Whyte: Since joining the Eskimos, Whyte has missed just one FG attempt and leads the CFL at 92.3%. He has made all five of his 4th Quarter field goal attempts and kicked a last-play walkoff game-winner from 53 yards two games ago.

Edmonton receiving: Both Adarius Bowman (886) and Derel Walker (840) could reach 1,000 yards this week and rank #6 and #8 in the CFL. They are #1 and #6 in “targets” but are easily outmatched by teammate Kenny Stafford in other key stat. Stafford has more TDs (9) than Bowman and Walker combined (7).

Henry Burris: Burris leads the CFL in passing yards with 4,365 on pace for 5,612 yards. He is trying to become just the second Ottawa QB to lead the entire CFL in passing – the only other player to accomplish that was Russ Jackson in 1969 (3,641 yards). He is also trying to become the oldest player to lead the league at 40 years, 6 months. Anthony Calvillo was 39 years, 3 months old when he won in 2011 and Ron Lancaster second-oldest at 39 years, one month in 1977.

Matt Nichols: Has two previous starts against the REDBLACKS, each coming earlier this season for Edmonton (Jul 9 & 17/15). So this makes it a very unusual SECOND set of back-to-backs for a player against another team in the same season. Nichols’ career-high 3 TD passes came against Ottawa on Jul 9/15, his career-high 3 interceptions is also against Ottawa (Jul 17/15).

Matt Nichols II: Since becoming the Winnipeg starting QB 5 games ago, he has thrown just 2 interceptions in 179 attempts. His current streak is now up to 134 consecutive pass attempts without throwing an interception.

Winnipeg 2nd half adjustment: At BC last week, Lions’ QB Jonathan Jennings threw for 307 yards and 3 TDs in the first 30:00 of play. The Bombers adjusted and held him to just 65 passing yards, an interception and no TDs in the second half. They held BC to just 58 net yards in the 2nd half.

Three at 1,000 yards?: Ottawa has three receivers on pace to reach 1,000 yards this season: Chris Williams (#5, 919), Brad Sinopoli (#7, 863) and Earnest Jackson (#9, 839). Ottawa has NEVER had three 1,000-yard receivers in the same season and the last time they had two was in 1996 (Joseph Rogers and Robert Gordon). They have had two in one season just three times.

Consistent Ottawa starters: The REDBLACKS have had 14 players start all 14 of their games this season. That ranks #2 in the CFL exceeded only by Montreal who have 15 players not miss a start in 2015.

Ottawa winning despite a turnover deficit: Ottawa is 3-3 this season when they commit more turnovers than their opponent. Last season they were 0-11 in that situation.

Winnipeg – every game close of late: The last THREE Blue Bombers’ games have all been decided by 3 points or less including last week’s walk-off win at B.C. Place. For the season they are 3-3 in games decided by 4 points or less.

Looking Ahead

A Parallel back to 1991: With an equal W-L record with Calgary, it sets up a 3-game run to take first place in the West. The last time that Calgary and Edmonton entered the final three games with absolutely even W-L records was in 1991 at 10-5 apiece. Edmonton finished the year with a 2-1 run while Calgary lost Game #16 at Toronto and won only once in their final three games to finish at 11-7 second spot.

Jonathan Jennings first 3 starts: The first-year CFL QB has a 1-2 record in his first 3 starts but has thrown for 1,017 yards and 9 TD passes. In CFL history only six QBs have thrown for more than 1,000 yards in their first three career CFL starts and only two for more than Jonathan Jennings.

Edmonton at home: The Esks are in their best recent run at home having won 10 of their last 11 games – their best since 2003-04 when they captured 13 out of 14 at Commonwealth Stadium.

Red Zone-free game: Last week’s game vs Calgary was so tight defensively that NEITHER TEAM ran a single regular offensive play from scrimmage inside the Red Zone. It was the first game in 4 years (Jul 22/11 Ham vs BC) without a Red Zone chance.

EDM Going for 6: The Eskimos come into this game riding a 5-game win streak. Their most recent 6-game winning streak in one season was a 6-game run in 2003.

Lions’ 4th Quarters: In each of the last seven games, BC has been outscored in the 4th Quarter by a 74-18 margin over that span. The Lions have led 8 times going into the final 15:00 this season and have a record of just 3-5 in those games. For the year, BC’s scoring differential is +7 over the first three Quarters, and -64 in the 4th Quarter.

Edmonton leads Calgary: The win last week by Edmonton ended Calgary’s run of 9 straight weeks with at least a share of first place. They trailed Edmonton after Week 6 at 4-2 against the Eskimos’ 4-1 record, but fell behind last week at 11-4 by virtue of the season series tie-breaker. It was the first season series win for Edmonton over Calgary since 2011.

BC in third: Despite last week’s loss the Lions remain in third place at 5-9. Their remaining schedule however is the toughest among the three teams vying for third in the West. They play Edmonton, Hamilton, Toronto & Calgary with a combined .690 win %. Winnipeg holds the tie-breaker but BC holds onto their own destiny.

Edmonton in the playoffs: The Eskimos playoff spot this season is their 56th in club history and extends their all-time CFL record. This year’s playoff berth breaks a tie with Winnipeg who also had 55 coming into 2015.

BC passing: The Lions passing attack has averaged 343 yards per game over the last four contests (with 10 TDs) compared to just 219 yards over the first 10 games.

Winnipeg-Ottawa back-to-back sets: This will not be the first time that Ottawa and Winnipeg have engaged in a back-to-back set and in something of a scheduling quirk over time, it will the sixth time in history. They played back-to-back in 1989, 1990,1991, 1994 and most recently in 2002. They split in that 2002 set as well as in 1991, Ottawa swept in 1989 and 1990, and Winnipeg swept Ottawa in 1994.
